Sarawak PAS has condemned the arrest of PKR Youth exco Zulhaidah Suboh for wearing the distinctive Bersih 2.0 T-shirt in Miri yesterday.

NONE "This is an attempt to scare the rakyat. However, I believe threats like these will only increase sympathy and support for Bersih in the struggle for free and fair elections, " the Islamic party's information chief Mohd Azani Abdul Rani said today.

Zulhaidah ( left ), the first to be arrested in Sarawak in the nationwide Bersih crackdown, was picked up immediately upon arrival at Miri airport about 1.40pm yesterday and was taken to the Miri central police station at 3.15pm.

Piasau assemblyperson Ling Sie Kiong, who is also a lawyer, was on hand to represent her.

Met by PAS representatives at the Miri police station this morning, Ling confirmed Zulhaidah's arrest, and said she was due to be taken to court for remand order against her.

Pursuant to this, Zulhaidah was remanded for additional three days pending investigations by police.

Police have come down hard on those supporting the electoral reform rally planned for July 9 after Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein declared the demonstration illegal, raising concerns over public safety and order.

All told, more then 150 people have been arrested for wearing Bersih T-shirts, allegedly to promote the NGO and its rally, or for being in possession of Bersih paraphernalia.

Dozens of others, including top opposition figures and prominent members of the Bersih steering committee, have been called in for questioning.
