The federal government was today urged to encourage government linked companies (GLC) to hire Umno members for senior positions.

Perak delegate Idris Hashim, while debating the motion on the economy, said GLCs should be used to help the Malay community.

NONE "What is the use of having GLCs if they are not used to help the party and the Malays who are governing the country?

"In this assembly, I noticed there is only one GLC, namely Proton, which participated in the exhibition. Where are the rests of the GLCs?

“I do not want to say much as it may offend others but shouldn't the GLC also help the party and its members," he said.

Emulate Najib

Meanwhile, Puteri wing delegate Wan Salwati Abdullah urged party leaders to emulate party president Najib Abdul Razak in engaging  the youths through Twitter and Facebook .

She said youths account for 52 percent of the population and they spend a lot of time interacting on social networking websites.

She said it was necessary to influence the young or they will absorb values from abroad, such as how the United States voted in a person from an ethnic minority as their president.

"Roughly eight million of our population can vote but only five million are registered. If the remaining three million are registered they account for such a significant number and could change the landscape,” she said.

On the proposal to repeal Section 15 of the University and University Colleges Act (UUCA), Wan Salwati said this will allow Umno to get closer to university students, and prevent them from Pakatan Rakyat’s influence.
