A high-powered committee to resolve the dispute between DAP chairperson Karpal Singh and the party’s Penang deputy chief P Ramasamy has doused the issue.

The committee’s three members said in a joint statement that Tamil daily Makkal Osai had yesterday published a correction on one of its articles that set off the dispute.

In view of the clarification made my Makkal Osai , the committee said Karpal, Ramasamy and the DAP central executive committee had decided to “move forward” on the issue.

“We will address and resolve internal differences using party channels to strengthen party unity, solidarity and cohesion so that we can single-mindedly ensure that DAP and Pakatan Rakyat can take on and defeat Umno and BN in the next general election,” the statement says.

In the correction yesterday, Makkal Osai chief editor M Rajan said it had wrongly attributed a quote to Ramasamy, leading to the row he had with Karpal.

Ramasamay had allegedly said the party should rid itself from “godfathers” while Karpal in turn alluded that the former was a “warlord”.

This led to the duo warring through the media during the run up to the Penang DAP convention last Sunday.

The committee was formed on Tuesday evening with the purpose of ending the dispute between the two party leaders.

Meanwhile, DAp has also decided to act against those responsible for a disturbance during the party's state convention in Penang last Sunday.

“What happened was disgraceful and cannot be allowed to be repeated,” said Karpal in a separate statement.

He said that those responsible for organising or encouraging the disturbance during the convention would face the disciplinary board, regardless of where they stood in the party hierarchy.

“The DAP shall not tolerate, or accept, under any circumstances, political intimidation from any quarter from within or outside the party,” stressed the veteran lawyer.
