Coffeehouse chain Starbucks has been nominated for the ‘Inhuman Organisation Award' (Anugerah Organisasi Tiada Kemanusiaan, OXK) by the Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia (PPIM).

The right-wing consumer lobby group also nominated retail chains Giant and The Store, finance organisations Malaysian Building Society Bhd (MBSB) and Bank Rakyat, satellite TV provider Astro, and ticketing agent Ticket Charge for the ‘Unconcerned Organisations Award' (Anugerah Organisasi Organisasi Tidak Prihatin; OXP).

NONE PPIM chief activist Nadzim Johan ( left ) said Starbucks had been nominated for the award based on allegations that some of its profits go to Israel.

"Starbucks allocates a portion of its profits to the Jewish regime as a show of support to their cause.

"The Jews also collaborate to inflict tyranny. They kill not only Muslims but also children. That is why we are nominating it for the OXK award," Nadzim told a press conference yesterday.

As for The Store, Nadzim accused it of having a promotion for alcoholic beverages during Ramadan.

When contacted, The Store's administrative manager Rita Baharudin said the supermarket opposes the nomination because it was a "technical error".

Meanwhile, Giant corporate communications and public relations senior manager Yuswanis Yusof said she was unaware of PPIM's allegations against her retail chain.

Nadzim said the awards were not only to topple organisations but also to defend consumer rights.
