MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek has no right to speak about hudud as he has no expertise in Islamic jurisprudence, says Perak mufti Harussani Zakaria.

NONE "Issues regarding religion are set. Do not criticise or belittle issues regarding faith because it only shows our insolence," Harussani is quoted as saying by Malay language daily Sinar Harian today.

He was commenting on Chua's statement last week on the effect of hudud should it be implemented, including a potential 1.2 million job losses.

The issue was also repeatedly raised during MCA's annual general meeting over the weekend.

Harussani said weak law enforcement was the reason why some political leaders have been vocal about hudud.

"This is our weakness," he is reported to have said. "The laws are in place, but not executed properly.

"As a citizen of this country, we should respect the constitution, including Islam's place as the official religion."

Meanwhile, English language daily The Star had quoted Chua denying that he was attacking Islam in his criticisms, saying that the target was PAS and its brand of hudud.

“When we criticise PAS’ hudud, we are not criticising Islam. Everytime we talk about PAS, the opposition would say we are attacking Islam. Why? Because they have equated PAS with Islam, which is wrong.

“PAS is a political party. Islam is a religion. They are insulting Islam for equating themselves with it,” Chua reportedly said, adding that MCA respects Islam as the official religion of the federation.
