Lynas said today that it will abide by the rules and regulations set by regulatory bodies in the country.

It said this response to recent "inaccurate media reports" regarding the removal of residues generated by the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (Lamp) in Gebeng, Kuantan.

Lynas said it would convert the WLP residues (containing very low-level naturally-occurring radioactive materials) into a commercially safe product called "synthetic aggregate".

It said it had on Dec 7 carried out a demonstration at Lamp in Kuantan to show the public and media members that the imported raw material was safe to the public.

"Our vice-president and managing director Mashal Ahmad did not at any point during the briefing and the demonstration say that the wastes will remain in Malaysia," Lynas said in a statement issued in Kuantan.

It said Mashal had clearly stated that the synthetic aggregate would be exported to other countries in accordance with international and local standards and regulations and used as civil engineering material.

Lynas also said the plant to convert the WLP residues has been built in Lamp and was now ready for operation.

"Lynas is now reviewing all press news to identify reports that deliberately portray Lynas as deceiving the public and the government of Malaysia," it added.
