The Kelantan government today postponed the implementation of licensing terms involving hair salons owned by non-Muslims, under the Kota Bharu Municipal Council by-laws.

Kelantan Local Government, Culture and Tourism Committee chairperson Takiyuddin Hassan said the decision to postpone the by-law until a study on the matter was completed, was made during the weekly state government exco meeting today.

"The decision to postpone was made after taking into consideration the views of the two largest Chinese organisations in the state, during a meeting here last week," he told reporters after the exco meeting.

Recent news reports covered the woes of a hair salon owner in Kota Bharu, Ong Lee Ting, who claimed he had been issued 11 summonses since 2010 by the local authority because non-Muslim female workers at his premises were found trimming the hair of non-Muslim male customers.

As to whether the decision to postpone the by-law was linked to the possible jeopardising of non-Muslim support for PAS during the 13th general election, Takiyuddin said all actions were definitely related to the general election.
