Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) claims the Selangor government’s delay in building additional pumping system in Wangsa Maju caused disruption of water supply to over half a million consumers since last week.

Chief executive officer Ruslan Hassan said the proposal to build the system was made in 2009 and in March 2012 to the federal government, which approved the plan and loan for the project.

"But until now, the Selangor government is still discussing the design of the project, expected to be completed in one year if implemented using fast track method," he told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur, today.

He said the proposal to build the pumping system was made after realising that water disruption would occur as the pump house in Wangsa Maju was operating on overload.

The Wangsa Maju pump house with capacity of pumping 136 million litres daily  (MLD) has been pumping 200 MLD of water to meet increasing demand of late.

The pump house which started operating in 2004 is under the management of Perbadanan Urus Air Selangor Berhad (Puas).

"We proposed a pumping system with capacity of 180 MLD, but understand the Selangor government will build a system with capacity of 120 MLD," he said.

The daily demand for water in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Putrajaya is 4,400 MLD compared to the supply of 4,436 MLD, thus depleting the water reserve.

Ruslan urged that the Langat 2 Water Treatment Plant Project by the federal government or projects proposed by the Selangor government be hastened as the pumping system was only a short-term solution.

"A long-term solution requires a new water supply source such as Langat 2 project. We support this project as water disruption will happen in future.

"Syabas has no power over this project and are just pleading so that implementation can be accelerated for the convenience of consumers," he added.
