Dewan Ulama wants Pakatan alliance reviewed
MUKTAMAR PAS Central Ulama wing has accepted a motion proposing the Ulama Syura Council and PAS Central Committee create a committee to review the party’s political cooperation in Pakatan Rakyat.
MUKTAMAR PAS Central Ulama wing has accepted a motion proposing the Ulama Syura Council and PAS Central Committee create a committee to review the party’s political cooperation in Pakatan Rakyat.
The motion is one of eight resolutions from the Special Conference of Malaysian Ulama which was held in Kedah on September 14.
The motion by Federal Territory and Penang Dewan Ulama PAS was accepted unanimously by 521 delegates from 137 divisions nationwide.
“I hope the tahaluf siyasi (political cooperation) does not become a pact that just comes and goes. Instead, (it should be) carried and implemented or continued to be strengthened,” Federal Territory delegate Abdul Hadi Abdul Halim said.
The motion proposes that the committee that is formed studies and evaluates the strengths, weaknesses, successes and failures of the Pakatan alliance in terms of the benefits and damage to Syariah.
Among the other motions passed at the gathering were:
PAS central committee include a clause stipulating that the president’s post, along with the deputy and at least one vice-president, be held by an ulama;
The proposal was made by the Kuala Nerus PAS Ulama which felt the move would prevent "confusion" in the minds of members and ensure continuity between the ulama leadership and the leadership at the highest level of the party.
The central committee rejects the goods and services tax (GST) to be implemented by the federal government in 2015, as this contradicts Islamic taxation principles;
“The Dewan Ulama Muktmar also motions that central PAS stresses this stance and urge the Malaysian government to withdraw the decision to implement (the GST) in mid-2015,” the motion reads.
PAS faces the NGO accused of bringing Islamic liberalism and pluralism propoganda, including that supported by the Islamic Renaissance Front (IRF).
“In fact, we require leaders (of PAS caught up in such thinking) to quickly withdraw their support to Islamic liberalism and pluralism, especially that supported by IRF before Umno and BN use it as an excuse and weapon to attack PAS and its leaders,” stated the motion.
'Leave it to full muktamar to decide'
In a later press conference, PAS Ulama chief Harun Taib said he is leaving is to the full muktamar to decide on the motion pertaining to the top three party leadership posts.
“It is up to the muktamar (to approve). It is a suggestion. If it is accepted without debate, even better,” Harun (

Even so, he said the relationship between the ulama and professionals in the party must be maintained as that is the “secret to PAS’ strength”.
When asked on Karpal Singh’s alleged urging for race and religion-based parties, including PAS, to be de-registered, Harun said he is “not upset” with the remark as it is clear the DAP national chairperson does not understand Islam.
“We work with DAP and PKR to help them understand Islam.
“The alliance is new. Karpal has yet to learn Islam. So we forgive, (as) we will be destroyed if we fight the ignorant ( orang jahil ).”
