The Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (Lamp) in Gebeng has not been affected by floods that have badly hit the Pahang state capital of Kuantan.

A statement issued by Lynas today said the rare earth refinery is operating as usual.

NONE In addition, it said, the Lamp residue storage facility (RSF) that stores radioactive wastes meets international standards and is designed to prevent any leaching into the ground.

"The RSF was designed and constructed to provide sufficient capacity to contain stormwater caused by the worst flood that occurred in this area over the last 100 years,"Lynas said.

Located about 20km from Kuantan, Lamp has been the subject of controversy over the potential hazards posed by its operations, triggering several rounds of mass protests by environmental movement Himpunan Hijau.

Much of the concern is centred around radiation emitted by one of its three waste streams, with alarm also being raised over other potential hazards, such as excessive salt content in its wastewater.

Lynas and the national regulator, Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB), have consistently denied that the plant poses a threat to health or the environment.
