UMNO ASSEMBLY A Perlis Umno delegate has urged the authorities, namely the Home Ministry, to extend the Ops Cantas crackdown to include members of the Coalition of Malaysian NGOs (Comango).

Ramli Sharif, from the Arau Umno division, said not only are these NGOs harping on values which goes against Islam and the East, some of the NGOs are not even registered.

NONE "Only 12 of the Comango NGOs are registered while others are not registered. Therefore, Comango can be considered an illegal organisation," he claims.

"Hence, I appeal to the party vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also the home minister, as Ops Cantas is his specialty, to extend it to include Comango."

Ops Cantas is an ongoing police operation said to be aimed at tackling the recent spike in crime and gangsterism.

Comango comprises a coalition of 54 NGOs that have submitted its comments and report to the UN Periodic Review (UPR) on human rights.

Ramli added that the values fought for by Comango that included seeking rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community were against Islamic and Eastern values and hence serious action should be taken.

"It is not only against Islam but against the principles of mankind and outlined in our Rukunegara. Hence, it is wise that we wipe out such negative influences from the country," he said in debating the motion on religion and education.

The country also cannot follow totally all the demands made by United Nations if not in line with Islam and our values. The government have not also given them the mandate to make all these demands," he said.

On Tuesday night, party deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin at the launching of the three wings of Umno Youth, Puteri and Wanita, sounded a warning on the spread of Western values and norms that included LGBT, pluralism and liberalism which are against the country's values.

Ramli's views on calling on the government to adopt a hard stand against Comango and other deviant practices was also echoed by Sabah delegate Ariffin Mohd Ariff from the Kimanis division.

Ariffin cited an Indonesian scholar who praised Malaysia's laws in curbing all this negative influences and urged that such hard stances be maintained

"We should not bow down to such demands," said the Kimanis delegate.

PAS not sincere about muzakarah

Meanwhile Perak Umno delegate Mohd Nizam Zakaria said while Umno has always extended to hold muzakarah (discussion) with PAS, the Islamist party has not shown any sincerity in doing so.

He added that PAS has been imposing too many conditions before holding a muzakarah.

"However, in holding a muzakarah, there must be sincerity on both parties. It seems Umno is sincere but not PAS in imposing various conditions. The muzakarah is to strengthen Islam and Muslims in Malaysia," he said.

Kelantan delegate Ahmad Termizi Musa said PAS had used religion for political gain whareas, Umno is the only party which brings advancement to Muslims.

He also reminded Umno members not to fear the capabilities of opposition party members in matters pertaining to Islam.

"Once, during Friday prayers the imam at a mosque where I went allowed this opposition politician to lead the prayers.

"However, his recitation of the Quran in leading the prayers was not correct. Hence, Umno members should not be afraid to go on the forefront in terms of leading prayers or religion as the opposition is also not that good," he said.

Ariffin the delegate from Sabah also wanted the government to stem the spread of syiah teachings.
