The Kamunting detention centre, which is vacant following the release of the last six Internal Security Act (ISA) detainees yesterday, will be used for the newly introduced Security Offenses (Special Measures) Act 2012 and amended Prevention of Crime Act 1959.

"We will maintain the Kamunting camp but it will be used for other purposes such as Sosma and PCA," Home Minister Zahid Hamidi ( left ) was quoted as saying in an Utusan Malaysia report today.

Zahid added that the Home Ministry will ensure the detention centre in Perak is properly maintained and will not fall into a state of neglect.

The daily also quoted a statement by Zahid, saying that there are plans to turn the 93.3hectare detention centre into an "agro-prison".

He reported said that low-risked prisoners will be placed there, where they will be trained to produce agriculture goods.

Zahid had further said that last year, the programme saw prisoners producing RM520,000 worth of vegetables, fresh water fish and livestock.
