PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim said he and his party were not aware of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) inked between the Selangor state and the federal governments earlier today.
 
"I was kept updated about the previous contacts between Khalid Ibrahim (the menteri besar) and the ministry. 
 
"But this one, we were not aware. That is why I'm guarding my comments," Anwar, who is also the state economic advisor, said after attending a high-tea session in Kajang today.
 
He said that while he agreed "in principle" with the deal, he said that he is still studying the information being fed to him by state government, and could not elaborate on the matter as of yet.
 
"We agree to finding a quick solution to this water issue," Anwar said.
 
He, however, denied that Khalid's move in inking the water deal would curtail plans under PKR's "Kajang Move".
 
"Why curtail? It is helping. (An) immediate solution is better," he said.

Khalid's last hurrah?

 
PKR director of strategy Rafizi Ramli admitted earlier today that PKR was not aware of the deal with Putrajaya.

It is understood that party leaders were only told of the matter after midnight early this morning and that the party leaders are currently waiting to see the contents of the MOU.

Meanwhile, Malaysiakini was only alerted by the state government of the signing of the MOU an hour before the event took place.

The Kajang by-election, which will be held on March 23, was engineered by PKR to pave way for Anwar to contest and win a seat in the state legislative assembly. It is widely speculated that PKR did so to eventually replace Khalid as menteri besar.

The reason, among others, was that Khalid and the PKR leadership differ in their approaches towards the water deal.

Thus far, supporters of Khalid and Anwar have traded barbs, accusing both their opponents of having an interest in the water deal with Putrajaya.
