Malaysia is working with Sweden to confer diplomatic status on Malaysian Tourism officers, which will provide them immunity from prosecution.

This follows the case of the Malaysian couple who have been charged in Sweden with alleged abuse of their children.

Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Hamzah Zainudddin ( right ) said this when replying Annuar Musa (BN-Ketereh) in the Dewan Rakyat during Question Time this morning.

Not all Malaysian Tourism officers are granted diplomatic status, as this depends on the countries concerned, he said.

For instance, Azizul Raheem - the children’s father - was granted diplomatic status in South Africa, but not in Sweden.

Hamzah said Malaysia has a similar procedure in granting diplomatic status only to foreign officers included in lists that are submitted.

 

"We will observe the (trial of the couple) and not interfere (in Sweden's legal process)," he said, when asked if whether the government is satisfied with developments.
