DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng has asked whether murderous threats and violence are Umno’s new approach to salvage the party from destruction.

Lim said DAP was shocked to hear about Federal Territory Umno Youth members threatening to burn down the party’s headquarters, and “kill” those in the premises in Kuala Lumpur, in the incident yesterday.

The group members also tried to tear down the DAP’s billboard, submitted a memorandum to Serdang MP Ong Kian Ming by tearing and throwing it at him. and poked the nose of a staff member who was standing behind Ong.

They want Seri Delima assemblyperson RSN Rayer to be sanctioned for his “celaka” remark directed at three Umno leaders who attended a rally in Seberang Jaya in January, at which banners blaming DAP for the May 13 racial riots were displayed.

“They have not only gone overboard with violent acts and threats to kill but committed inhumane behaviour,” the Penang Chief Minister said at a press conference at the state assembly today.

“Is this how you coach your members to be future leaders of the country?” Lim asked Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.

“Perhaps this is the face of Umno liberals, and shows how open they are,” Lim said sarcastically.

“If this is Umno’s way, then there is no hope for them to be future leaders of the government.”

Umno members, together with their Perkasa comrades, had forcefully stormed into the Penang legislative assembly on Wednesday, in an unprecedented act that attracted nationwide condemnation.

Lim called for stern action against the violent protesters, saying this was not the first time Umno Youth had acted in such a disgusting manner.

He also urged DAP members to remain calm, telling them not to be cowed by the provocation as it appeared to be a strategy to undermine the party’s election campaigns in Bukit Gelugor and Teluk Intan, which go to the polls on Sunday and on May 31 respectively.
