MCA Youth today rebuked its counterpart Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and told him to control his members who had threatened to burn down DAP's headquarters.
"MCA Youth condemns in the harshest terms the threats by Federal Territories Umno Youth to torch the DAP headquarters, which in so doing can maim and endanger lives.
"We urge Khairy to control and to calm down his members," MCA Youth chairperson and senator Chong Sin Woon ( left ) said in a statement today.
Chong said while MCA and DAP were political opponents, "the protection of democracy and stability must come first".
"We disagree with DAP's failure to compel (Seri Delima state assemblyperson) RSN Rayer to retract his insult, but let us do so at the ballot box, and not through forceful harassment, vulgarities, property destruction and threats of violence and arson," he said.
While Penang BN chief Teng Chang Yeow yesterday condemned the Umno Youth action in storming the state assembly on Wednesday as "unacceptable in our democratic society", Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin said today their behaviour was "a natural reaction" in defence of the party.
Told to behave
The Umno Youth members were angry at Rayer for using the word "celaka" (damned) when speaking about three Umno leaders - Reezal Merican Naina Merican (Kepala Batas MP) and Shabudin Yahya (Tasek Gelugor MP) and Penang Umno deputy chief Musa Sheikh Fadzir - during the state assembly sitting on Tuesday.
Rayer had condemned the Umno leaders for attending a rally against Machang Bubuk assemblyperson Lee Khai Loon in January, at which a banner blaming DAP for the May 13, 1969, racial riots was displayed.
Lee, a PKR Youth leader, was protesting the rising cost of living by making fun of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's infamous 'kangkung' remark.
While Chong did not comment on the Rayer's remark, he told Umno Youth not to "stoop to the level the opposition accuses BN to be" and instead deliver its disagreement in a civil manner.
"While the opposition unjustly piques Umno and BN with all forms of negative remarks, Umno Youth must not stoop to how the opposition portrays us to be with such unacceptable behaviour, but emerge mightier and honourable by delivering our disagreements in a rational manner."
