TELUK INTAN Only stupid people would vote for a candidate just because she is pretty, said Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan.

Without naming names, Abdul Rahman urged Teluk Intan voters not to make political choices based on the candidate's physical appearance.

"Do we vote because she applies lipstick? Because she smiles and puts on make-up and is a little bit prettier than Mah?

"Only a stupid person would do that," he said at a function in Teluk Intan this evening.

Earlier, Abdul Rahman praised BN candidate Mah Siew Keong as an experienced leader and pointed out the latter’s opportunity to be a minister should he be elected.

He also said that the voters should not vote for a candidate based on trivial standards.

"Maybe just because Mah does not apply lipstick, he does not put on make-up, so they don't vote for him," said the Kota Belud MP.

The Teluk Intan by-election sees a straight fight between Mah and DAP candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud, whose candidacy has attracted much attention nationwide.

In his hour-long speech, Abdul Rahman also queried, on two occasions, whether Malaysiakini reporters were around and warned them not to misquote or spin his words.
