Don't repeat 'ingrates' remark, MIC tells Zahid
TELUK INTAN MIC has cautioned Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi against repeating his "ingrates" remark to the Indian voters in Teluk Intan.
TELUK INTAN MIC has cautioned Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi against repeating his "ingrates" remark to the Indian voters in Teluk Intan.
Party deputy president Dr S Subramaniam said such statements can jeopardise BN's chances in the May 31 by-election.
Calling it an advice to BN parties, he added that politicians, in an overzealous attempt to win votes, should be careful not to trample on sensitivities of other races.
Subramaniam (centre in photo ), who is also health minister, felt that Zahid had erred in terming the Chinese who vote for DAP as ingrates during a ceramah at a Malay village in Teluk Intan yesterday.
"This is the kind of issue we should try to avoid as much as possible," he said.
"We have to maintain the balancing act," he said, adding they should choose a more inclusive approach accepted by all.
Subramaniam, who has been campaigning on the ground for four days, said based on his observation, voters do not seem smitten by the DAP candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud.
"It (her candidacy) might be good in Subang Jaya or Bangsar, where the demographic of voters are totally differrent.
"Teluk Intan (has) more working class and those from the lower middle group," he said.
Worse still, Subramaniam said Dyana could actually lead to DAP garnering lesser votes compared to the general election in 2013.
In the previous election, he said 46 percent of Indians voted for BN but this time around, MIC hopes to increase this to 60 percent.
Teluk Intan has 11,468 Indian voters.
Dyana would be facing BN candidate Mah Siew Keong in the by-election for the parliament seat.
