Body is with Pakatan, but heart is with Umno

YOURSAY ‘That is why PAS is always making U-turn, roundabout...’

PAS snubs Anwar's plea, insists on two names

Gerard Lourdesamy: It seems odd for PAS to insist on including PKR’s Azmin Ali's name or that of Dr Idris Ahmad’s since both are endorsing party boss Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and have declined the nomination.

But PAS these days is full of oddities and inconsistencies to the point that it has forfeited the respect and trust of many ordinary Malaysians who do not support Umno-BN.

The palace may have issued a decree which is the translation for "titah" in the Malay language, but one must look at the context in the face of the clear provisions in the state constitution and the established conventions.

If all three Pakatan Rakyat parties are united in naming only one candidate, the sovereign is bound to accept the nomination but when you nominate three or more candidates it invites problems and dissension in that the least popular candidate may get appointed despite not commanding majority support in the legislature.

Since all three parties agree that the nomination must come from PKR, the choice of candidate belongs to PKR and they have selected only one name.

Quigonbond: The Selangor sultan may have been wrongly advised and the palace’s private secretary in sticking to some convention is behaving rigidly.

Pray tell how DAP and PKR are going to provide the two nominees: “We wish to propose (1) Wan Azizah and (2) XYZ. But we wish to clarify that our party's assemblypersons are all supporting Wan Azizah”?

Even if PAS' nomination letter does not have this "qualification", the sultan can take notice that two of PAS assemblypersons has undertaken to support Wan Azizah. Wan Azizah therefore has the majority.

Am I to understand that even if Wan Azizah command the majority, the sultan can reject her as MB? That would be the real constitutional crisis.

We must question why the need to buy time while Selangor administration is listless with the on-going water crisis.

If I were advising the sultan, I'd suggest to him to ask Khalid Ibrahim to call for an emergency state assembly, and call a vote to appoint Wan Azizah as MB. That would be unlike Perak, consistent with Pakatan ideals, and is constitutionally sound.

Wg321: PAS is physically with Pakatan but their heart is with Umno. PAS ulama supported by Hadi Awang wanted to form an Islamic state with the help of Umno.

That is why they always making U-turn, roundabout and three-point turn; and turning every day like they are on the merry go round.

In the end, Pakatan and Umno-BN will not trust them. The main problem with them is that PAS can never accept a woman to be the menteri besar. They dare not openly say it out. They wanted the sultan to say it on their behalf.

Anonymous_5fb: When we look at PAS, we have to look at many facets. I would say if we give up on PAS by looking at how they deal with this Selangor MB crisis, then we in fact fall into trap set up by Umno.

And if this happens, then we have wasted the efforts put up by the Erdogans in PAS. We must be aware that PAS is essentially an Islamic party, and the propaganda played by Umno have one way or another, like Allah, Bible in Malay, Sodomy I and II issues, greatly influenced PAS members who are incline to the ulama faction.

It's the existence of the Erdogan faction that prevent the implosion of PAS. Hadi, being the president is well aware of the risk of this implosion, has to be tactful in taking care of the feeling of the ulama-inclined PAS members and supporters.

It's never easy to bring together PAS, PKR and DAP to fight for a common cause under Pakatan.

Lone_star: The sultan will appoint the Adun who has the support and confidence of the other Aduns as the MB.

DAP and PKR have given their full support and confidence to Wan Azizah. It is only logical for both parties nominate her as the only candidate for MB for there is no other. Surely HRH Sultan can understand this.

Victor Johan: Wan Azizah has already obtained the majority of 30 votes, not counting the rest of the 13 PAS assemblypersons.

Only one selection with majority is sufficient and all the sultan has to do is appoint that person.

Any other process or perceived conventions are ultravires to the constitution. PAS needs to understand the law when it has legislative representatives in the state assembly house.

Astounded: Actually I don't see any problem even if PAS submits two names. After all, the sultan did say the names of people who can command the support of the majority of the state assembly.

Any one other than Azizah will not be able to command the support of the majority of the assembly. PKR and DAP can each submit the same name on the basis that they know of only one person who can command the support of the majority of the members of the state assembly.

Assuming the two names submitted by PAS are those of Azizah and Azmin, Azmin can continue to decline or if he can try to get the support of Umno and PAS (the other 13) and yet he does not have the majority. Azizah will still be the MB.

Coming out of all this is the sad reality that PAS cannot be trusted. What if PKR had actually won GE13 and this sort of thing occurs? What if DAP had actually used PAS' logo during GE13?

Fair Play: I suppose the subject matter is now past the stage of debate. Just wait for Sept 3 and the matter would be resolved one way or the other.

No doubt, one fact is crystal clear. Pakatan will break up because I doubt very much DAP would want to get into another and perhaps bigger mess with PAS as a coalition partner.

For the right-thinking rakyat perhaps, if Pakatan (PKR and DAP) could act as a strong and credible opposition in the state and federal level, it is a good start as any. Changes come in small steps.

Kim Quek: I have a better idea, Mustafa Ali. Why don’t you submit four names, since the sultan asks for more than two from each party.

And if you believe what you are doing is right, then you should also convince the other two parties to do the same. In that way, we will have a neat dozen.

That would enable the sultan to have more choice for him to choose the best for the people of Selangor. What do you say, Mustafa?

Maplesyrup: PAS can submit whatever names they want, but in the end, it is the candidate who commands the majority that matters.

If tuanku decide to appoint another person, it is just prolonging the transition process.  A wise ruler would not want to be drawn into civilian affairs.

Rnz: Two names? That's unconstitutional and goes against the concept of confidence of the majority.

U-turn, roundabout and PAS' many flip-flops
