Lawyers representing lawyer Edmund Bon have asked the police whether their client is a suspect or a witness in the sedition investigation against Bon.

 

Bon, who is also a human rights activist, is represented by his law firm, Bon Associates.

The firm in a letter said if Bon is a suspect, then the police should furnish the five police reports lodged against him.

 

The letter dated Sept 17 is addressed to the investigating officer, who is based at the Seberang Perai Utara district police station.

 

“If Bon is a suspect, then furnish us the five police reports and the basis or content of the complaints in the report. Please state the words that are complained to be seditious.

 

“Also, state the address of the alleged seditious article in The Malaysian Insider and the words that are alleged to be seditious,” states the letter sighted by Malaysiakini .

 

Bon has offered the police to record his statement at his office at Pantai Business Park between 10am and 1.30pm on Saturday.

 

Last Friday, it was reported that Bon, who was then overseas, was being investigated for sedition for comments he made in a news article published by The Malaysian Insider .

 

This is related to Bon’s comments questioning the need for non-Muslims to adhere to a fatwa or a royal decree, following what was decreed in Kedah on Jan 19 which bars them from using the word 'Allah'.

 

This follows a decision by the National Fatwa Council in 1986.

 

Bon has already stated his willingness to cooperate with the authorities in the wake of the sedition probe against him last week.

 

He is among those being investigated by the authorities, including academician Azmi Sharom and PKR vice-president N Surendran, both of whom have already been charged.
