MUKTAMAR Terengganu PAS swung its support at the 60th muktamar today for the party to accept the Selangor menteri besar's post if granted by the sultan going against several delegates' call to adhere to its promise that the office belongs to the PKR.

"If a PAS leader is appointed as menteri besar, why are we suspicious?

"Why are not be confident of ourselves? Will our candidate be corrupted?

"If the sultan chooses (PAS), we should defend it and our partners in Pakatan should accept this choice," declared PAS Terengganu delegate Mohd Nor Hamzah at the muktamar in Batu Pahat, Johor .

However, several other delegates did not share his view, emphasising the need to keep the party's promise.

Perlis delegate Wan Kharizal Wan Khazim (left) said that this was a matter of moral integrity.

"There is a possibility that the menteri besar position may be given to PAS, but based on moral integrity, I urge this muktamar to make a decision to hold on to our promise.

"We must respectfully reject the position. We need to stress to the rakyat that we need to hold on to high moral integrity," he told delegates this morning.

The muktamar, or annual general assembly, is the highest body in PAS, superseding even the powerful syura council.

His remarks comes amid confirmation that a new menteri besar would be sworn in next Tuesday. It still remains unclear which nominee, PKR or PAS, the ruler has chosen.

Negri Sembilan PAS delegate Mohd Khairil Anuar Mohd Wafa, too, urged the muktamar to declare, ahead of the menteri besar’s appointment day, that the Islamic party did not want the position.

"I agree with Perlis that PAS should move an emergency motion that PAS rejects the menteri besar position out of respect for Pakatan," he said.

He added even if the sultan insisted the position should go to PAS, at least the Islamic party would have made a gesture of solidarity.

He also urged that the registration of Pakatan as a formal entity be expedited and asked the party's syura council to facilitate its mechanism.
