Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali said today PAS should lead Pakatan Rakyat, if the coalition is serious about competing with the BN in a two-party system.

This is because, Ibrahim said, PAS is a Malay-majority party, like Umno, which leads the BN.

He said this formula is used by BN to reflect Malaysia’s racial demography.

"If PAS takes the lead of the Pakatan leadership and DAP is not big-headed and mellows down a little, like MCA, I believe this could be a starting point (for the new Malaysian political landscape).

"Even if they do not succeed in forming a two-party system, at least they will come close to it.

"Only then will BN and Pakatan be able to compete on good governance,” Ibrahim told reporters today.

He was commenting on the infighting within Pakatan, following the Selangor menteri besar crisis.

'Anwar and his family'

Ibrahim said he had anticipated that Pakatan will face an internal crisis as early as 2008 when the coalition formed.

"Even an MB crisis can take three months to resolve. Yes, they all agree that (PKR de facto leader) Anwar (Ibrahim) will be prime minister but what about other roles?"

"Before this, Anwar wanted his wife to be menteri besar, so it is not illogical to expect him to push his children for other top posts including finance minister," he said cynically.

He also noted that Pakatan will have a tough time staying together due to their divergent ideologies.

"PAS struggles for Islam, while DAP struggles for a Malaysian Malaysia and Pakatan is a pragmatic coalition for the purpose of installing Anwar as prime minister."
