PARLIAMENT Kinabatangan MP Bung Moktar Radin wants the government to use the Sedition Act on anti-sedition campaigners who are urging that the Act be abolished.

"They are asking for the Act to be abolished, that means they have ill intentions. Better catch them early," he said during Question Time in Parliament today.

Bung said this in his supplementary question directed to the Prime Minister's Department, following the recent sedition dragnet against opposition lawmakers and academicians.

Mahfuz Omar (PAS-Pokok Sena) then stood up and pointed out that Bung was also referring to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak as having ill intentions, since Najib was the one who first wanted the Act to be abolished.

Earlier, Anwar Ibrahim (PKR-Permatang Pauh) had asked the government to state whether the prosecution of several opposition lawmakers under the Act was in line with the government’s promise to repeal the Act.

However, de facto law minister Nancy Shukri, in her reply, said that the government does not “interfere” in the Attorney-General’s Chambers’ (AGC) affairs and thus the prosecution buck fell on the AGC.

“We do not step into their shoes. We are the executive, we do not interfere with the AGC. Prosecution is something they do,” she said, repeatedly stressing that there is no selective prosecution.

She said that the government is still in the midst of formulating the Act’s replacement.
