It is a tradition that come end of December, Malaysiakini takes our readers through the best and the worst news of the year.

And what a year 2014 has been! The unthinkable happened - a Malaysia Airlines (MAS) jumbo jet disappeared into thin air and another one shot down allegedly by a missile in a span of four months. A total of 537 souls were lost.

There were other tragedies too, among them the death of veteran politician Karpal Singh in a car crash. Other news that hogged the headlines included the spate of Sedition Act arrests, the seizure of bibles from a church, the aborted Kajang Move and its resultant Selangor Menteri Besar crisis, the Sodomy II hearings, the incessant Perkasa/Isma attacks and the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MBD) scandal.

Like last year, we are letting Malaysiakini subscribers decide the top 10 headline-grabbers of 2014. There are 24 news categories listed in alphabetical order in this year’s vote.

Voting is done by showing your preference for each item - ‘0' being the lowest and ‘10' the highest. You can give the same score for more than one item.

Go ahead, take one last look at 2014 before we move on to a hopefully more mundane 2015.

And don't forget to also vote for the Newsmaker of the Year.

A quick recap - a newsmaker does not necessarily have to be the most popular individual. He or she is one whose actions consistently make news headlines, and in so doing affects the course of public discourse and creates an impact in Malaysian politics, either for better or for worse.

This year, there are 12 candidates. Take your pick. Only paying subscribers can vote and everyone has one vote. Voting ends at midnight, Dec 28, and the results will be announced on Dec 30.
