A PPP leader wants former Bar Council president Ambiga Sreenevasan charged over her urging to the authorities to stop harassing Christians in Malaysia.
A Chandrakumanan accused her of instilling hatred towards the government when Christmas is around the corner.
“I suggest that Ambiga be investigated under Section 298A of the Penal Code for causing disharmony, disunity and creating hatred among the citizens with ill intention,” said the PPP vice-president in a statement today.
Chandrakuman claimed that since she had uttered the remarks knowing well that religious issues could cause a split and create tension, it showed that she is not bothered about the nation or the people.
"This kind of statement is infuriating and will paint a negative picture of the government, making it look like as though the authorities are purposely taking action against Christians.
"This is absolutely ridiculous and unacceptable," he added.
He said the government under the present leadership of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak would never penalise people on religious matters if no harm is caused.
"Justice should prevail in this matter, as it is a case of concern to everyone.
"The opposition should not play up such issues to worsen the situation; this will only cause anxiety and unnecessary tension," he added.
As a lawyer, Chandrakumanan said, Ambiga should understand that nobody is above the law.
"If the issue needs investigation, then just let the police do their job. She should stop instigating and provoking.
"If the police have acted unlawfully, then action should be taken against them. Tolerance among religions is required as religious freedom is outlined in the federal constitution for all races,” he added.
Yesterday, Ambiga, who is also the patron of NGO Negara-Ku, criticised the police for seizing dozens of hymn books with the word Allah in Johor.
"Malaysia is fast gaining fame for its Bible-seizing activities
"I believe the public deserve to know where these orders to seize and arrest are coming from and the basis of those orders," she had said.
