EC: Redelineation in Sarawak to go on
The Election Commission (EC) will continue its public inquiry process for redelineation in Sarawak despite urgings by electoral watchdog Bersih to halt the process pending a judicial review application at the Kuching High Court.
The Election Commission (EC) will continue its public inquiry process for redelineation in Sarawak despite urgings by electoral watchdog Bersih to halt the process pending a judicial review application at the Kuching High Court.
EC chairperson Abdul Aziz Yusof told Malaysiakini that the commission will continue with the process unless it receives a court order ordering otherwise.
PKR’s Batu Lintang assemblyperson See Chee How on Feb 17 was granted leave by the Kuching High Court for his judicial review application on the redelineation process.
See ( left ) wants the entire process to be declared null and void, claiming EC had not followed the stipulated public notice period, among others.
But Abdul Aziz said that the EC was merely going to follow what was accorded to it in the federal constitution.
“The EC will continue fulfilling its responsibility according to the federal constitution as it has not received any court order stopping it from doing so,” Abdul Aziz noted, when asked if the EC would stop the process as demanded by Bersih.
Bersih, however, had said that it might apply for court injunctions if the EC does not stop its redelineation process pending the judicial review.
The EC’s public inquiry process for redelineation began yesterday across the state.
See had argued that the notice was published in newspapers with low circulation, while Bersih also criticised the EC’s restrictions for its public inquiry process, which includes time limitations and barring of mobile phones into the hearing rooms.
