Najib Abdul Razak has been urged to relinquish the finance portfolio pending a probe on 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

PAS vice-president Husam Musa said the prime minister must also step down as chair of 1MDB's advisory board until the matter is resolved.

Speaking to reporters after lodging a police report on 1MDB, Husam said it was necessary for Najib to do so in order to ensure that investigations are conducted smoothly.

"During this period, Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin should fill in for Najib," he said outside the Dang Wangi district police headquarters.

1MDB, conceived by the Najib administration in 2008, has been under intense scrutiny over its business dealings of late.

Najib has ordered the auditor-general to vet 1MDB's accounts and that the results of the probe be scrutinised by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

Husam said in his police report that he wants the police to conduct an investigation into the US$700 million (RM2.575 billion) payment made by the debt laden company to Good Star Ltd, Seychelles.

He said the authorities should investigate Najib as finance minister and chair of the advisory board as well as the management of the state investment fund for the years 2009 and 2010.

US$1 billion paid to Petrosaudi also raised

The report was lodged under Section 405 of the Penal Code for criminal breach of trust.

"This (report) also concerns the payment made by 1MDB amounting to US$1 billion (or RM3.48 billion during that year's conversion rate) to Petrosaudi International Limited without that company having any company profile, any review of assets or shareholders," Husam said.

All of this was made worse, he said, when the payment did not get the approval of the 1MDB board of directors.

Referring to a news report in the business journal The Edge , Husam, who is also Saloh assemblyperson, said Najib must take responsibility if reports were true.

"If what The Edge reported is true, then it makes it very clear that Najib, as the finance minister during the time of transaction, is not capable of upholding the country's finances.

"This only strengthens the reason for him to vacate the position of finance minister," Husam said.

Collectively, he said, the cabinet must be responsible for 1MDB and as such, reports should have been filed from time to time to ensure things are running smoothly in 1MDB.

Husam added that he also supports Muhyiddin's call for an audit report to be conducted on the debt laden company.
