Police was today forced to release PKR vice president Tian Chua after it failed to obtain a remand order.

"Tian Chua was released after magistrate Sara Zariati rejected police's application for remand," his lawyer R Sivarasa said in a Twitter posting.

The remand hearing was held at the Jinjang police detention centre this morning.

Tian Chua was yesterday arrested at Dang Wangi district police headquarters after voluntarily showing up to give a statement over his involvement in the Kita Lawan rally.

A day before that, police had turned up at Tian Chua's residence near midnight to arrest him but was told off by Sivarasa for harassing his client.

Sivarasa had said this was because police had already set an appointment with Tian Chua to have his statement recorded.

Subsequently police agreed to record his statement the following day where they arrested him.

With this arrest, Tian Chua became the 11th person to be hauled over for the March 7 rally which protested the jailing of Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim.

The Batu MP was investigated under Section 143 of the Penal Code which states that ‘whoever is a member of an unlawful assembly shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to six months or with fine or with both’.
