Two months after being incarcerated, Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim has apparently brought ‘reformasi’ to the Sungai Buloh prison.
Now, inmates are served milk three times a week, which was not on the menu prior to this, and there are also fewer mosquitoes.
After learning about complaints by inmates regarding mosquitoes in the prison compound, Anwar had relayed this message to Selangor Menteri Besar Mohd Azmin Ali through his lawyers.
This led the state government to instruct the local council to carry out fogging in the area.
“As a result, there are fewer mosquitoes,” lawyer Latheefa Koya ( left ) told Malaysiakini .
She also said while Anwar’s lawyers can meet him up close, his family, however, can only communicate with him using a phone through a glass barrier.
“Once (Anwar’s daughter) Nurul Nuha inquired whether she could be in chambers (with the lawyers) so that she can be with her father. It is sad,” she added.
In prison’s hospital wing
Meanwhile, Anwar had also been delivering religious talks for inmates as well as counseling them.
However, Latheefa said since the Permatang Pauh parliamentarian is housed in a solitary cell in the prison’s hospital wing, there has been less interaction between him and the other prisoners.
“Hence, he is unable to give counseling sessions and religious talks like before,” she added.
On Feb 10, the Federal Court upheld Anwar’s sodomy conviction and five-year prison sentence.
The opposition leader has always maintained that the charge was fabricated by his political rivals but the government has denied this.
