KJ: No need for PM vs Dr M debate

Khairy Jalamuddin has dismissed the need for a debate between Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The youth and sports minister said this was because Najib has answered the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) issue.

"No need to debate. The prime minister has answered and we are waiting for the Audit Department’s report.

"So let us wait for the audit result," Khairy told reporters at a function in Putrajaya.

Asked how long would it take to resolve the 1MDB issue, he replied: "There is no time frame for this."

"We (in Umno) made the decision to resolve the problem, but we did not provide a time frame. The sooner the better," Khairy added.

The 1MDB issue tops the list of Mahathir’s grouses against Najib.

The opposition has also demanded answers concerning the firm’s astronomical debt and questionable transactions.

The Umno supreme council has called for the matter to be resolved.

Last Saturday, Mahathir, who has been calling for Najib's resignation, said he was willing to debate he issue with the prime minister.

Yesterday, Najib answered in his blog a series of questions raised by Mahathir.
