To woo local Chinese, Beijing asked to play cupid

In two consecutive general elections, Chinese voters have thrown their support for the opposition bloc, much to the chagrin of the ruling coalition.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak was most disappointed when his numerous attempts to woo the community's hearts and minds failed to yield results in the last national polls.

And now it appears that the government is turning to Beijing for help.

Speaking at the launch of the China-Malaysia friendship park in Putrajaya yesterday, Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Mansor urged Beijing to educate the Chinese here on the government’s contributions for more than five decades.

The BN secretary-general said the government has brought about development and stability, but Malaysians tend to forget this.

He pointed out how the government managed to transform Putrajaya, which was formerly oil palm and rubber plantations, into the administrative capital.

"There can only be development if a country is stable without political and racial problems," he was quoted as saying by Sin Chew Daily .

DAP lawmaker Teresa Kok, however, expressed shock over the minister's statement.

The Seputeh MP warned that Malaysia would become a laughing stock if BN sought the help of foreign governments to win votes.

"Chinese Malaysians are citizens of this country. They have the wisdom to judge the political scenario and vote accordingly. They don't need advice from foreign governments.

"Is Tengku Adnan subconsciously still considering the Chinese Malaysians as those from the mainland who are squatting in Malaysia," she said in a statement.
