Guan Eng to pay RM500k for 'racist granny' remark

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has lost a defamation suit filed against him by Penang opposition leader Jahara Hamid for calling the latter a "racist grandmother".

According to The Star Online , Judicial Commissioner Nordin Hassan ordered Lim to pay RM500,000 in damages with a five percent interest per annum from the day of the judgement and RM40,000 in legal costs.

The judicial commissioner also granted an injunction to prevent the DAP secretary-general from further repeating the remark.

Lim was further ordered to retract his statement in the media.

During a press conference at an event in Juru, Seberang Perai, today, Lim told reporters "My lawyers have strongly recommended to me to file an appeal and I accept my lawyer’s recommendations.

"I will follow my lawyer's advice."

Meanwhile, Jahara said: "The court decision has enabled me to recover my pride as the opposition leader as well as a woman."

A Berita Harian online report quotes Jahara as saying that Lim, as Penang chief minister, should not being throwing allegations or labels that could tarnish one's pride.

"I am glad that the case is finally over. I hope this will be the lesson for all leaders. We shouldn't throw allegations and labels to bring down one's pride," she is quosted as saying.
