Controversial blogger Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris, better known as 'Papagomo' was released today after being remanded for allegedly incendiary postings he made over the Low Yat Plaza riot last Sunday.

"He was released on police bail at 4.30pm just now," his lawyer Ahmad Shuaib Ismail told Malaysiakini .

Wan Muhammad was arrested in the wee hours of Wednesday after online postings of his purportedly fuelled racial sentiments which led to the riot outside the popular IT shopping complex in Kuala Lumpur.

His remand, to allow questioning of him under the Sedition Act, expired today.

Ahmad Shuaib ( photo ) said no specific conditions were set for his client's release other than requiring him  to turn up when summoned by police for further investigations.

The lawyer said that he had yet to be informed on whether Papagomo will be charged on Monday for any offence.

"We don't know anything about prosecution yet," said Shuaib.

Others arrested too

Police have arrested more than 20 people in connection with the riot including Malay Armed Forces Veterans Association president Mohd Ali Baharom and Bagan Umno division head Shaik Hussein Mydin.

Shaik Hussein has also been freed on police bail while Ali, also known as 'Ali Tinju' was charged under Section 4 (1) (b) of the Sedition Act for allegedly making an inflammatory speech outside the plaza.

 

He was  allowed RM8,000 bail. The rest of those  arrested, including several traders  at the mall, are being held under the Penal Code for rioting and causing damage.

Violence erupted at Low Yat Plaza on Sunday following a  handphone theft and a fight there a day earlier.

A mob of 200 people turned up at the entrance of Low Yat Plaza and had gone on a rampage.

At least six people were injured including several media personnel.
