PAS is ready to walk alone, says Haron Din

PAS will cut ties with PKR as well if the latter joins DAP and Gerakan Harapan Baru (GHB) in a new opposition coalition, said PAS spiritual leader Haron Din.

Utusan Malaysia quoted him today saying that PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim’s call for a new and stronger opposition coalition appears to imply that it wants to cut ties with PAS.

Haron said if this new coalition comes to fruition, then the Islamist party would not oppose it.

“With that decision, then the relations between the two parties are henceforth severed and each would go about its own way following the disbandment of the opposition coalition.

“If they want to form a new party, I wish them all the best,” he was quoted telling Utusan Malaysia yesterday.

Haron was referring to Anwar’s statement last week, which was delivered from Sungai Buloh prison by his lawyers.

"We are working towards a strengthened coalition and will work with all progressive movements including NGOs such as Bersih, Abim, Ikram and newly formed GHB.

"This coming together of a wide range of groups committed to reform and change will offer a genuine democratic and just alternative to the rakyat.

"Let us all put aside all other considerations and differences, and focus upon this great struggle to save Malaysia," he said.

GHB is a splinter group of PAS members led by its former deputy president Mohamad Sabu ( photo ), and it aims to register itself as a political party.

Meanwhile, Utusan Malaysia also quoted PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail saying that it is still too early to say whether PKR supports GHB because it has yet to register as a political party.

“We will be with those who oppose BN,” she reportedly told a press conference in Arau yesterday.
