PAC hearing to be put off till 'later', 1MDB told

Embattled sovereign fund 1MDB has been informed that their hearing before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has been put on hold.

"Today, we received, through the Ministry of Finance, an official notification from the parliamentary secretary/PAC secretary that the PAC hearing scheduled on Aug 4, 5, 6, 17 and 18, 2015 as well as Sept 8 and 10, 2015, have been postponed to a date to be determined later.

"We once again reiterate our intention to extend our full cooperation to the PAC and look forward to appearing before the committee on the new dates," said 1MDB.

The progress of the PAC in probing the allegations surrounding Prime Minister Najib Razak's pet project 1MDB hit a brick wall last week when its chairperson Nur Jazlan Mohamed ( photo ) was made a deputy minister and had to step down from the committee.

Four of the eight BN MPs in the PAC were appointed into Najib's cabinet in last Tuesday's controversial shuffle.

Apart from Nur Jazlan, the other three appointed were Wilfred Madius Tangau, Reezal Merican Naina Merican and Mas Ermieyati Samsudin.

The appointments had been criticised as an attempt by Najib to delay the 1MDB investigations.

Previously, House speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia had decreed that the committee cannot continue its investigations on 1MDB until a new chairperson is elected.

"To evade any dispute or issue raised on validity of the proceeding while the chair is vacant, it is only apt that the PAC reconvenes after the position of chairperson is filled," he was reported as saying.

However, opposition PAC members had insisted they would continue the hearings , despite Pandikar's decree.

PAC vice-chairperson Dr Tan Seng Giaw said this was because they had not been given any official letter regarding the suspension of PAC.

"So we will be at the August 4 meeting," he had said in a press conference last Friday.
