Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has received the full backing of the Keningau Umno division in Sabah to be the party’s next deputy president.

The party elections are scheduled for 2018.

The division’s chief, Sairin Karno, was reported in Berita Harian Online today as saying that this in line with Zahid being the No 2 in the country's administration.

“We have the responsibility to support Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak as he is the No 1 leader in the party and the administration. Umno Keningau also supports Ahmad Zahid as the next deputy president now that he is the DPM and an Umno vice-president,” Sairin reportedly said yesterday.

Zahid officiated the Umno Keningau division meeting yesterday. Also present were Sabah deputy chief minister Yahya Hussin, Pensiangan Umno division chief Abdul Ghani Yasin and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Joseph Kurup.

Ghani said the present Umno crisis could be resolved through strong commitment by leaders and the grassroots.

There is a certain amount of unrest in the party over the 1MDB issue as well as the recent sacking of Muhyiddin Yassin ( photo ) as DPM. He is also the current deputy president of Umno.

“All members and leaders should focus on the next general election. There is no need for us to be emotional. The reshuffling of the Cabinet is normal as it is the prerogative of the PM. It is not wise to question it. The focus should be on Umno,” Ghani added.

Zahid meanwhile announced an allocation of RM1 million each for the Pensiangan and Keningau, as allocation for development projects.
