A group of about 20 students held a demonstration today calling for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to resign.

Calling themselves 'Gerakan Mahasiswa Selamatkan Negara' (Student Movement to Save the Country), the group marched about 1.5 kilometres from Bank Negara to Parliament Square.

They expressed disappointment about the controversy surrounding 1MDB, the scandal-mired state investment company that is Najib’s brainchild.

They also said Najib’s decision to discuss the controversy over the RM2.6 billion deposited in his personal bank accounts behind closed doors was unacceptable.

Braving the rain, they shouted anti-Najib slogans and vowed to stay on at Parliament Square until Najib himself gave a response.

The demonstration started at 2.30pm and they reached the the Parliament building at 3.15pm. Police personnel then stopped them at the road outside the building’s main gate.

According to the group's spokesperson Lau Yi Leong, the students were tired of the government’s excuses on the alleged RM2.6 billion worth of donations.

Want transitional government

“We will continue pushing until all three of our demands are met which are that Najib must resign immediately, the authorities must reveal the findings of the MACC, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and the attorney-general and that the students want a discussion between them and members of Parliament,” he told reporters outside Parliament.

He added that their fourth demand was to discuss the formation of a transitional government to resolve the problems afflicting the country’s administration.

The students' posters for the march today among others displayed calls to 'Save the Country' and 'Say no to dictators, corruption and oppressors.”

As of Press time, the students remain seated by the road outside Parliament, holding banners despite the heavy rain and instructions from the police to vacate the area.
