Bersih 4 ends peacefully amidst shouts of 'Merdeka'

Bersih 4 rally calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak ended peacefully at midnight last night.

This was quite possibly the largest Merdeka Day eve gathering in Kuala Lumpur ever, with tens of thousands of Malaysians from all walks of life involved.

Soon after the national anthem was sung, the vast majority of the rally participants abided by Bersih's instructions to disperse.

The Bersih 4 rally was called following the revelation that Najib had received RM2.6 billion in "donations" which party leaders claimed were used for election purposes.

Bersih, an electoral reform pressure group, said the massive "donation" had called into question whether the 2013 general election was conducted fairly.

Putrajaya attempted to dissuade rally goers by claiming the event was illegal and would disrupt the government’s Merdeka Day parade.

A ban was also imposed on the trademark yellow Bersih 4 T-shirts.

However, tens of thousands of Malaysians defied the ban and joined the 34-hour rally, which began at 2pm on Saturday and ended at the stroke of midnight last night.
