Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak will survive any vote of no confidence called against him in Parliament, BN's Kota Belud MP Abdul Rahman Dahlan said today.

The BN strategic communications director said this in response to resounding calls at last weekend’s Bersih rally for a vote of no confidence in Najib to be tabled in Parliament.

"When they say they want the prime minister to step down, I don't think they understand how these things work.

"You want to do a vote of no confidence, then by all means do it in Parliament.

"We will fight you and we will win. We are confident that we will win the vote of no confidence," Rahman ( photo ) said at a press conference in Serdang.

Opposition MPs in speeches at the Bersih rally called for an emergency parliamentary session and for BN MPs unhappy with how Najib is perfor ming to vote with the Opposition in a vote of no confidence against the prime minister.

Rahman also said he simply "could not fathom" Bersih's strategy to go to the streets to urge for Najib's resignation.

'The government has come out nice'

"For you to go to the streets and urge MPs to support a vote of no confidence, it's a little bit too much. I can't fathom that strategy," he said.

Asked whether Bersih had achieved anything with the rally, Rahman pointed out that BN was still the government.

"There's no problem. Bersih 4 is just one of the instalments.

"We have seen signs of how the rallies have become ineffective. There's nothing new that we hear from them.

"As it is right now, I think we have become immune to Bersih."

However, Rahman said, he was happy that there was no violence during the rally.

"I think the government has come out nice in this whole thing, because we were restrained in our response, despite provocations.

"I take my hat off to the police, the relevant authorities and the deputy prime minister (Ahmad Zahid Hamidi)," he said.

New party will 'cannibalise' PKR members

Asked his view on the formation of Parti Amanah Negara, Rahman said he believes that the new party will "cannibalise" PKR members.

"Gerakan Harapan Baru (GHB) is not going to get PAS members, so it will cannibalise PKR members.

"They will eat each other's supporters. I don't think PAS members will go and cross over," he said.

Abdul Rahman also believes that the new party will only have six to seven MPs and that the PAS grassroots would not "go to the other side".

"PAS members are a very disciplined lot. God knows how much Umno has tried getting them to our side," he admitted.

At the announcement of the new party yesterday, GHB chief Mohamad Sabu said they expected to have 35,000 members by the time of Parti Amanah Negara’s official launch on Sept 16.
