Do not drag the police into the nation’s political situation, said inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar.

“Don’t drag us into politics. We do not interfere with political matters.

“Our task is to only investigate based on the reports lodged. Political statements... We do not wish to intervene,” he told reporters after an event in Kuala Lumpur today.

Khalid was asked to respond to former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s criticism regarding the arrest of Umno man Khairuddin Abu Hassan and his lawyer Matthias Chang.

“I don’t want to comment on Tun M’s statement yesterday,” the top cop said, using Mahathir's honorific title.

Khairuddin had lodged complaints on 1MDB with international enforcement agencies, while accompanied by Chang.

Mahathir criticised their arrests under Sosma at a press conference flanked by Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin and Umno vice president Shafie Apdal.

Also present at the high-powered press conference was Gua Musang MP and Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, former Kedah menteri besar Sanusi Junid and former MCA president Ong Tee Keat.
