Lawyer schools minister on no-confidence vote

Lawyer Syahredzan Johan is unable to comprehend BN strategic director Abdul Rahman Dahlan's challenge to opposition leaders regarding a no-confidence vote against the prime minister.

"The no-confidence motion is a vote against the prime minister, not an implicit vote of confidence for opposition MPs," he said in a Facebook post.

Rahman had questioned if Opposition Leader Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as well as DAP’s father and son team of Lim Kit Siang and Guan Eng were prepared to resign if the vote against Najib Abdul Razak is defeated.

However, Syahredzan said the vote of no confidence is tied to the constitutional requirement that the prime minister is someone who commands 'the confidence of the majority'.

He pointed out that there is no such requirement to be a member of parliament for the opposition.

"The no-confidence motion is not a no-confidence vote on the PM as member of parliament for Pekan, but as PM.

"If the no-confidence vote carries through, he does not have to resign as Pekan MP, but as head of the executive i.e. the PM," he said.

As for Rahman's challenge, Syahredzan described it as "distorted representation" of the Westminster system perpetrated by a full cabinet minister.

Earlier today, the BN strategic director, who is also urban wellbeing, housing and local government minister, said if the three leaders have any honour, they would resign if the vote of no confidence fails.

"That shows they can't command the confidence of the opposition MPs," he added.

Rahman said the opposition leaders cannot just propose a no-confidence vote and pretend their reputation is not damaged if the vote is defeated.
