PAS does not seem to fully understand its position in forming the Selangor government and the responsibility that comes with it, Amanah information chief Khalid Samad said.

Khalid, who was the deputy commissioner for Selangor PAS, said this in response to the Islamist party's rejection of Amanah's proposal for it to sign a cooperation agreement with Pakatan Harapan to clarify the status of the Selangor government.

"I find it strange that they (PAS) do not see the need for parties who make up a government to have an agreement between themselves as to what they agree to do together.

"Even in a kenduri kampung (village feast) all parties need to agree on what needs to be done and to coordinate with one another; what more in a government," he told Malaysiakini .

However, he noted that the responses to Amanah's proposal regarding the Selangor government have come from those not involved in the state.

As such, he hopes those in the Selangor state government will understand the need for an agreement as proposed by Amanah and will 'enlighten the unenlightened'.

PAS' staunch refusal to work with Amanah and DAP also seems to imply that the party prioritises its political agenda over an efficient and effective government for the people, he said.

"Maybe they do not understand that Amanah's proposal is to assist them in playing a more effective role in governing Selangor with Pakatan Harapan.

"This is as they may be overly suspicious of our intentions. We have no time to prove to them the sincerity of our intentions," he said.

'Up to PAS but rakyat watching'

If PAS turns down a reasonable proposal such as this, Khalid said he cannot 'see much wisdom coming from them in the future'.

He added that Amanah has no problems working with PAS, given the situation in Selangor.

Their co-operation, he explained, will be on a purely professional basis with the top priority being the rakyat’s concerns.

"In the end, it's up to PAS to do whatever it feels is the right thing to do. But of course, the rakyat is watching," Khalid added.

Amanah had suggested yesterday that Selangor PAS sign a deal with Pakatan Harapan to avoid confusion over the status of the Selangor government.

This is because PAS has no standing in Pakatan Harapan - the new opposition coalition - and yet three PAS members hold state exco positions while the deputy speaker is also from PAS, Khalid had explained.

"The Selangor government's status must be clarified so it will not be seen as a bi-coalition government made up of coalitions which do not acknowledge each other...

"It is feared that this will be like a married man who is also keeping a mistress. This anomaly must be resolved," he had said.

However, PAS vice-president Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah had strongly rejected this proposal, insisting that they will not work with DAP or Amanah.

"Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali said there is no such thing as Pakatan Harapan in Selangor.

"(So) we maintain our stand not to cooperate with DAP and Amanah. We only have ties with PKR and no one else.

"PAS is part of the Selangor government and there is no problem," he had said.

Azmin said he will discuss the matter with Amanah tomorrow.
