The opposition did not pursue a bloc vote to reject Budget 2016 last night because it would have been "a futile exercise", said Opposition Leader Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

"We did not discuss doing it yesterday, because you would have had to mobilise (MPs).

"We thought it would be a futile exercise, so let's us focus on other means," Wan Azizah told reporters outside the Parliament lobby today.

She declined to comment on what those other means were.

Budget 2016 was passed last night with a majority voice vote.

There were only 24 opposition MPs in the House.

Wan Azizah seemed resigned to fate when asked why the opposition threw away a chance to remove Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak by voting down the budget.

"We knew it was not going to work, from the last time we tried. And because of the abstention of some people, we didn't have the numbers," Wan Azizah said.

She was referring to PAS' decision not to vote on the budget.

The opposition tried to vote down the budget in the policy stage two weeks ago but it was carried by 128 votes in favour compared to 74 against.
