Sultan urges Johor non-Muslim religious leaders to foster unity

The Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, today urged non-Muslim religious leaders in the state to play a role in helping to keep the people united.

The responsibility of a religious leader is to unite the people and ensure that they harboured mutual respect for one another although from different backgrounds, he said after 16 non-Muslim religious leaders paid a courtesy call on him at the Istana Bukit Serene.

"I do not want to hear of any more racial problems in the state. Every community, such as the Chinese and Indians, are citizens of Johor. We must have mutual respect for one another.

"If you have problems, come and see me. I am here for you," he said at the audience with the leaders.

The religious leaders, led by Johor Tourism, Trade and Consumerism Committee chairperson Tee Siew Kiong later attended a luncheon with the sultan at the palace.

Speaking to reporters later, Tee said the meeting was a historic one for the people of the state.
