Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) urged the public to check with the party before making any donations to aid Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, who could be declared bankrupt if he fails to settle a court order.

Amanah secretary-general Mohd Anuar Tahir said Mohamad, better known as Mat Sabu, might not be able to pay the RM200,000 damages imposed on him in a defamation suit.

Anuar said that some quarters started fundraising within 24 hours of news that Mat Sabu lost the defamation suit against him by former Election Commission deputy chairperson Wan Ahmad Wan Omar.

"Amanah would like to offer our gratitude for the concern and support shown by all quarters.

"However, to ensure that there will not be any misconceptions about this fund, we (Amanah) would like to urge all quarters who wish to donate to first get in touch with us," Anuar said.

He added that the move would not only help to coordinate all fundraising activities by the party but also promote transparency and avoid future misunderstandings over funds raised.

Mat Sabu was ordered to pay RM200,000 in damages to Wan Ahmad on March 20, 2014, for a defamatory statement made in relation to the Sabah 'Project IC' issue.

He was at the time PAS deputy president and his statement was published by the party's official newsletter, Harakah , in its February 2013 edition.

Following Mat Sabu's failure to abide by the court order, a bankruptcy charge has been filed against him and it has been scheduled to be heard on Aug 11.
