The Terengganu state legislative assembly sitting today ended abruptly after speaker Mohd Zubir Embong was bombarded by questions on his decision to reject a motion of no confidence against Menteri Besar Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman.

"I have made my ruling, I want to postpone the House sitting till tomorrow," Mohd Zubir said before getting up and leaving the hall.

One opposition assemblyperson then heckled the speaker for "running away".

Earlier, Mohd Zubir rejected the motion on grounds that no notice was given.

Former Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad Said, who tabled the motion, and PKR Bandar assemblyperson Azan Ismail, however, argued that the state constitution clearly states that no notice is required for a motion of no confidence.

Despite their arguments that the Terengganu constitution took precedence over the state assembly's rules, the speaker insisted that his interpretation was that his consent was needed to waive the 14-day notice.

He also dismissed accusations that the motion was rejected because BN was afraid to go through a motion of no-confidence.

"It's not a question of fear but a question of rules. I'm just being the middleman," Mohd Zubir said.

He added that his decision could be appealed.

Mohd Zubir's defence, however, failed to satisfy opposition assemblypersons who continued to point out that Clause 33(11) stated that motions under the state constitution do not require any notice.

Amid the protestations, Mohd Zubir insisted that his decision was final and called for an end to the day's proceedings.

Ahmad was removed as Terengganu menteri besar and replaced with Razif in 2014.

This prompted Ahmad and two other Umno representatives to leave the party sparking a crisis in the state.

The crisis ended two days later when Ahmad rejoined Umno after after Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak apologised for removing him so close to his daughter's wedding.

Ahmad's speech at the Kemaman Umno division meeting last year, however, indicated that he was still sore from being removed as menteri besar.
