PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has warned voters in Sungai Besar that they might suffer divine punishment if they elect the wrong MP on June 18.

Electing lawmakers, Hadi said, is an obligation and voters would be responsible for the MP’s actions in the Dewan Rakyat.

"If what is said (by the MP) is wrong, we would have sinned and be damned by Allah," he warned at a ceramah in Sungai Besar last night.

PAS had previously said voting for its candidates would earn voters divine rewards in the afterlife.

The argument is Hadi’s Private Member's Bill to strengthen the jurisdiction of syariah courts is expected to be debated in the next parliamentary session.

The amendments to the Syariah Court (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 will pave way for the implementation of hudud in Kelantan.

The Sungai Besar by-election sees a three-way contest between PAS' Rani Osman, BN's Budiman Mohd Zohdi, and Amanah's Azhar Shukur.

Hadi said PAS' candidates, including Rani, are honest and responsible, who are made to swear a bai'ah (loyalty oath), which ensures they don't stray from the party's Islamic principles.

"If they betray the oath they will be damned by Allah.

"That is why our representatives don't eat animal feed (dedak) even if people offer it to them," he said, referring to the insult traded with former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad over the past week.

He added this is why PAS representatives have never been in any corruption scandals, including those involving bungalows.

While he mentioned no names, this is likely a veiled swipe at former PAS ally turned enemy DAP, whose secretary-general Lim Guan Eng is currently being probed for alleged corruption over buying his bungalow below market price.

This could also be a reference to former Selangor menteri besar Khir Toyo, who was recently released on house arrest after being jailed for corruption in his own bungalow purchase scandal.
