A last ditch plea to Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali by a food stall operator has failed to halt plans to demolish a place that is her sole source of income.

The operator, Jaye Sury Rajoo, told Malaysiakini the Kuala Selangor District Council (MKDS) had issued her a notice today, saying it would will demolish her shophouse-cum-food stall on Jalan Sungai Buloh-Kuala Selangor on July 23.

This came four days after she and her family handed a memorandum to the Selangor Menteri Besar’s Office, pleading for Azmin to intervene.

"We vote for (the Selangor government) but they can't help us. How are we going to eat?" the breadwinner asked.

Jaye Sury's shop became the sole source of income for her family of four after her husband and former crane operator suffered a stroke on June 25.

The stoke paralysed him on the left side of his body, and left him wheelchair-bound.

Jaye Sury has been operating the business since 1999, and she holds a trade licence from MDKS, as well as a permit for the building it occupies.

However, she received a notice from MDKS two months ago stating that she is encroaching on a drainage reserve land and has to vacate the site, or face eviction.

PSM secretary-general A Sivarajan said earlier this week that the state government misunderstood Jaye Sury's pleas, and that she only wanted to postpone the demolition of her shoplot.

“She is not demanding that the project stops permanently. She knows that she has to move. And we are just demanding that the menteri besar intervenes.

“On the whole road, there is (no development). Only 500 metres away, the developer wants to do (a housing) project. Even if they come tomorrow to demolish the property, there will not be any work done yet,” Sivarajan said.
