PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail today concurred with views that there needs to be a united opposition to face the 14th general election.

Wan Azizah, who is also the opposition leader, said this is more so because the ruling coalition BN has been in power since Malaysia's independence.

"We see that in Malaysia's political scene, BN has been in federal power since Independence.

“So any form of change that we want to do, we must be united," she told a press conference at PKR's headquarters in Petaling Jaya.

Wan Azizah also said the then Pakatan Rakyat federal opposition had won the popular vote in 2013 as they were united against BN during the 13th general election.

She said this when asked on PKR's cooperation with the newly registered Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), chaired by former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad and led by former Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin.

"So we (PKR) welcome the cooperation with Tan Sri Muhyiddin and his new party, and we pray for Tun Mahathir's health so that we continue to cooperate together," she said.

National Human Rights Society chairperson Ambiga Sreenivasan had during Anwar's birthday celebration last night said that the best present for him would be a united opposition against BN.

Asked for comment on criticisms against Bersatu's dual-membership policy, Wan Azizah said the question should be posed to the party's leaders.

However, when it was pointed out that the criticism also came from Harapan parties, Wan Azizah said: "We should have equal status for all.

"That is the policy, I remembered Anwar had in the past spoken against the New Economic Policy.

"That should be the way. All Malaysians should have equal rights," she said.

DAP Youth in a statement yesterday said that it would not work with a party that practises racist policies, including Bersatu.
