DAP lawmaker Jeff Ooi was released from police custody after four hours of questioning at the Penang Northeast police headquarters.

The Jelutong MP walked out with his lawyer RSN Rayer at about 6.20pm.

"He was under arrest for four hours and was finally released on police bail after they took his statement," Rayer said.

"Ooi has to report back to the police headquarters in one month's time."

Rayer, who is also the DAP Seri Delima assemblyperson, said Ooi is being probed under Section 256 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for publishing offensive content.

Asked how he felt about the entire ordeal, Ooi refused to comment.

He surrendered himself this afternoon over his "Adios" tweet in relation to the death of PAS spiritual leader Haron Din.

Ooi was accompanied by Rayer, and the duo declined to comment when met by reporters.

However, Ooi appeared to be unfazed, smiling and flashing the thumbs up sign when entering the building.

As at 6pm, he was still being questioned by the police.

Northeast district police chief, ACP Mior Faridalatrash Wahid, confirmed Ooi is being quizzed by investigators from Dang Wangi, Kuala Lumpur.

He also confirmed that several reports had been lodged against Ooi for his controversial tweet.

"The matter will be referred to the Dang Wangi district police station," he said.

Yesterday, Rayer said Ooi would meet the police to provide his statement over the tweet which allegedly insulted Islam.

On Sept 16, Ooi tweeted "Adios. Let there be peace" when news about Haron's death broke.

Since then, five police reports were lodged against Ooi for his "rude" remark, following which inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar told him to surrender to the police.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng admitted that Ooi's tweet was "insensitive" and apologised to Haron's family, saying the MP’s words did not represent the party’s stand.
